History

Faculty of Engineering Padang State University (FT-UNP), first named Faculty of Teacher Engineering (FKT) was established in 1964 with three majors, namely The Department of Machinery, Civil, and Architecture. In 1969 the department was increased by the Department of Electrical Engineering, then in 1983 changed its name to the Faculty of Technology and Vocational Education (FPTK), and in 1999 changed to the Faculty of Engineering (FT) in line with the change of IKIP Padang to Padang State University (UNP). The main mission of this faculty is to produce teachers in secondary engineering schools (STM). With the expansion of the wider mandate, the mission becomes increasing, namely producing professionals in the field of engineering.

FT-UNP metamorphosis was felt in the era of World Bank Project V to give confidence in IKIP Padang. Through the World Bank Project V departing from: (1) Indonesia's economic growth of 7% per year, the World Bank estimates that Indonesia needs skilled labor to be generated through STM, as many as 41,000 people per year, (2) the results of a labor survey conducted by the Ministry of Manpower, which states that between 1974 and 1978, Indonesia needs 63,700 STM graduates ( Depdikbud 1980). So in 1976 departments P and K through the Technical Education Development Project, specifically began to develop FKT IKIP Padang in conjunction with the development of Secondary Engineering School (STM), Technical Education Training Center (BLPT) and Secondary Development Technology School (STM Development).

Specifically the development of FKT IKIP Padang, above ground with an area of ± 30,000 m2builded a new FKT building with a floor area of ±10,012 m2, complete with equipment that has been adjusted to the demands of the vocational school curriculum in 1976. Through this development, FKT is then divided into three departments, namely the Department of Machinery, Electrical and Building Construction, which is further divided into five majors, namely The Machinery department, Automotive department, Electrical department, Electronics department and Building Construction department.

In 1983, with the entry of Family Welfare (KK), FKT changed its name to Faculty of Technology and Vocational Education. The change of name was then also followed by a change of the name of the department, each of which became the Department of Mechanical Engineering Education, Department of Automotive Engineering Education, Department of Electrical Engineering Education, Department of Electronic Engineering Education, Department of Building Engineering Education and Department of Family Welfare Education.

Furthermore, based on the Decree of the Director General of Higher Education No.1499/D/1996, which was then strengthened by the Presidential Decree No.93 dated August 24, 1999 on the expansion of the mandate received by IKIP Padang. IKIP Padang also changed its name to Padang State University, as well as fptk its name changed to Faculty of Engineering.

Accompanying the Decree of the Director General of Higher Education on the expansion of the mandate above, in 1997 the Director General of Higher Education also issued Decree No.1884/D/I/1997 dated August 1, 1997 on Non-Educational Study Program at IKIP Padang and SK No. 90/Dikti/Kep/1999 on the Establishment of Non-Educational Study Program Dioploma III Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Boga And Fashion, at FPTK IKIP Padang.

Furthermore, based on the Decree of the Director General of Higher Education No.1499/D/1996, which was then strengthened by the Presidential Decree No.93 dated August 24, 1999 on the expansion of the mandate received by IKIP Padang. In 2015, the Department of Family Welfare consisting of study programs, Tata Boga (D3), Fashion (D3), Makeup and Beauty (D4) and Hospitality Management (D4) and Family Welfare Education (S1) separated themselves from FT UNP by forming a new faculty namely the Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality of Padang State University (FPP UNP). So that the departments in FT UNP there are as many as 6 majors with 20 courses as follows:
